Star Guitar - The Chemical Brothers analysis

The music video ‘Star Guitar’ by The Chemical Brothers takes on an abstract form as the entire video consists of not so much the same images; more so the same type of images. This music video consists of a continuous journey along a train line through the train carriage window, not specifically from point of view however the beauty of this piece is that it can be interoperated this way given its simplistic nature. Due to its simplicity it may not be perceived as an abstract piece however because of its lack of narrative, given that it is a music video not a short film, it allows anyone to interpret the themes how they want. In addition to this the sound piece used is a sample from the David Bowie song Starman, this piece is used throughout giving as a background for the visuals as there are no lyrics or words throughout. In Bordwell and Thompson’s (1997) article it is said that “In opposition to dominant or mainstream cinema some filmmakers set out to create films that challenge orthodox notions of what a movie can show and how it can show it”. This is very true to this piece as it does not have to be bombarded with effects and loud sounds to convey a message, there are some things that need to be watched and interpreted by everyone in their own way. The directors intentions were to use the sound as a main element to accompany the visuals, with some of the beats and tones go in time with the visuals in the video.

A sound portrait of Stourhead

This sound piece was one that intrigued me quite a lot; on the basis it is a piece with no speech or human interaction included it is very much based around the sounds of nature. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of nature is peace and serenity, and to begin with this sound piece did start of giving the listener that type of vibe; birds and rain were heard and everything began quite calm. However, not even half way through, an almost eerie vibe took over with the sound of the constant creaking of a gate or a metal fence, with the added sound of the rain/ water drops playing constantly this completely switched the mood and initial vibe of the sound piece. Just over halfway through a gunshot was heard further emphasising the twist in atmosphere, following this was the sounds of crows obviously startled by the blast; as crows signify death it gives quite a drastic juxtaposition to the start of the clip where peaceful birds were heard singing and perhaps that was unintentional however it works very well with piece. Towards the end we hear the squelching of mud and finally another gunshot to finish the piece, this further emphasises the point made before and instead of giving the listeners closure it leaves more questions than it does answers, which in most cases is a very clever and more interesting technique to the audience.

Tango - Zbig Rybczynski (1983)

Tango at first seemed like an 8 minute long attack of the senses, due to its overwhelming display of new characters and the repetition of the entire sequence. However after watching and discussing Tango I have come to the conclusion that this short film was the most inspiring out of a a range of different short drama pieces. The fact that every couple of seconds a new character is introduced it truly allows the viewer to constantly engage with the screen, also as the director has used such diverse range of people in regards to age and the activities they are seen doing it brings further interest into the film without your mind drifting from the screen.
Overall the basis of this piece is very basic, using only a singular shot of this one room, however if any other approach was taken for this concept for example close up shots etc., then the films impact wouldn’t have been as powerful. The room itself almost appears like a dollhouse decorated with small, undecorated, odd pieces of furniture whilst you as a viewer are ‘placing’ new characters inside this one room every few seconds. As well as this the use of layering each person into frame was superbly done given that there were no collisions or interaction between most of them, although such a busy scene each character has their own purpose and just enough of their own space to do it in. Then towards the end of the film your eyes start to register that slowly but gradually each character is leaving the scene and you are subsequently left with the same characters that appeared at the beginning.
In my opinion these choices made by Zbig Rybczynski are what makes this film very inspiring to me, as a filmmaker I aspire to always keep my audience engaged with what they're seeing as well as allowing my films to deeply resonate with them for a while, much like Tango did for me.
